E-Abida will host a three-day, interdisciplinary conference ‘How to do things with Early Modern words: Interdisciplinary opportunities, dialogues and methodologies’ at Loughborough University, UK.
Our keynote speakers, representing the breadth of current early modern scholarship, are:
- Professor Ruth Ahnert, Queen Mary University of London
- Professor Martin Dzelzainis, University of Leicester
- Professor Tim Harris, Brown University
- Professor Terttu Nevalainen, University of Helsinki
The conference will take place in Martin Hall, the home of the School of English, Drama and Publishing.

Getting to Loughborough
Loughborough University (East Midlands campus) is easily accessible from London (1hr15 by train) and Birmingham (1hr), both of which have major airports, as well as being only 15 mins from the M1.

Loughborough University is situated a few miles from the train station and city centre. There are several hotels and B&Bs on or near to campus:
Burleigh Court Conference Centre and Hotel: 4* hotel, on campus. It is also the venue for the conference dinner.
Elite Athlete Hotel: on-campus fitness-oriented hotel.
University Lodge: university-run accommodation on campus with breakfast and evening-meal options.
The Link hotel: 3* hotel, 1.5 miles (walkable in terms of pavements/footways) from the conference venue.
Acommodation towards the city centre includes:
Premier Inn Loughborough: approx. 1 mile from campus and < 1 mile from the train station.
Holywell Guest House: approx. 1.2 miles from campus.
Travel Lodge Loughborough: approx. 1 mile from campus and < 1 mile from the train station.
There are a range of eateries on campus, including a bar and restaurant at Burleigh Court hotel.
Loughborough town centre also offers a selection of affordable restaurants. Some of these include:
Centro Lounge: informal dining, with gluten-free and vegan menus at reasonable prices. Town centre.
The Priory Pub, Nanpantan: spacious pub with good food, 2 miles from campus (not in town centre).
Laughing Buddha: Cantonese and Peking-style food, eat-in restaurant and takeaway. Town centre.
Goodliffes: British seasonal food, with a cocktail list. Town centre.
Peter’s Pizzeria: Top-notch pizzas. Town centre.
